About our Teacher Training course

Our initial teacher training course structure

Our primary 5-11 course is designed to ensure that you complete training with a comprehensive understanding of how young children develop and learn.

You will be supported on three high-quality, contrasting placements in Key Stage One (KS1) and upper and lower Key Stage Two (KS2). Here you will be able to use and develop your toolkit of teaching skills which have been underpinned by engaging central training, delivered in bespoke training rooms in our primary school bases.

You will learn about research-based learning theories in practical hands-on lessons, demonstrated by skilled, passionate subject leads.

After their training year, trainees enter the profession confident and secure in their understanding of KS1 as well as KS2.

Our curriculum is designed so that all trainees are challenged and supported at each stage of their journey of becoming a teacher.

You will  graduate with a Master’s level PGCE awarded by University of Leicester and will have full access to university facilities and services throughout the course.

What makes us different?

The ethos of Achieve with TELA is that you will be part of the TELA community, not just a trainee teacher on a placement. We invest in initial teacher training to train the teachers of the future for our children, our young people and our community of schools in Leicestershire, Leicester city and beyond.

You'll learn through a combination of classroom practice, and face to face professional  learning which is underpinned by the latest research. Professional learning sessions are paced and structured  and  you get opportunities to practice the theory you’ve learnt.

We know it is a challenging course, but we believe in supporting our trainee teachers to be the best they can be – We are a smaller provider and are proud that we get to know you.

Support

You are supported, every step of the way.

You will be supported by our central Achieve with TELA team, as well as the central SCITT team and as a student at the University of Leicester, by our colleagues at the University.

On each of your teaching placements, you’ll have a school mentor and ITT coordinator whose role is to ensure that you are supported in school, and that things run smoothly - that you have the best possible experience. We have a dedicated quality assurance leads who visit during your placements.

Your progress will be assessed throughout the course by your TELA / SCITT tutor, school-based mentors and other course tutors.

Qualification

By the end of the Achieve with TELA initial teacher training PGCE course you should have met the required professional standards for Qualified Teachers Status (QTS). You will be awarded a University of Leicester PGCE if you pass the level 7 assignments on the course -you will also have credits towards a Master’s Degree with the University of Leicester.
