National Professional Qualification in Senior Leadership

Develop the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to be a highly effective senior leader in a school.

Course outline

The NPQSL consists of six Face to Face days and three Twilight sessions. 

You will need to complete a number of interim school based learning tasks and a final assessment.

Who can apply?

You should be in a leadership role with cross-school responsibilities, for example:

  • An experienced middle leader
  • A Deputy Head / Assistant Head 
  • A Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) 
  • Other senior staff

Modules to complete

Pre task: Dual research task around whole school curriculum and intervention foci using impact based research and school data. 

  •  Leading with impact-motivating and influencing others 
  •  Increasing capability 
  •  Strategy and improvement 
  •  Teaching and curriculum excellence 
  •  Managing resources and risks
  •  Working in partnership

The NPQSL also has focused modules on East Midland priorities such as white working class boys and leadership in a faith school.

120 guided learning hours -

48 face to face hours

12 hours self-study professional tasks

6 hours coaching

12 hours engagement with online learning platform

42 hours workplace learning improvement project.


£1160  +VAT (TELA members receive a 30% discount on all NPQs)

 Scholarship funding is available for delegates working in a category 5 or 6 area, and those working in MATs or dioceses which cover those areas. 



You must have your Head Teachers full support to apply for  NPQ's.
