National Professional Qualification in Middle Leadership

Develop the skills, knowledge and confidence that you need to lead a high-performing team in a school and to improve classroom practice.

Course outline

The NPQML consists of three Face to Face days and three Twilight sessions.

 You will need to complete essential modules and a final assessed school based task.

Who can apply?

You should be a middle leader / aspiring middle leader in a school with the responsibility of leading a team, for example: a key stage leader a curriculum area leader a pastoral services leader a subject leader a head of department.

Modules to complete

Essential modules - You must complete all of the following modules;

  • The Connected Leader
  • The Professional Leader
  • The Accountable Leader

The NPQML also has focused modules on East Midland priorities such as white working class boys and leadership in a faith school. 

100 guided learning hours - 

27 face to face hours

12 hours self-study professional tasks

6 hours coaching

12 hours engagement with online learning platform and 43 hours workplace learning improvement project.


 £860  +VAT (TELA members receive a 30% discount on all NPQs)

 Scholarship funding is available for delegates working in a category 5 or 6 area, and those working in MATs or dioceses which cover those areas. 


You must have your Head Teachers full support to apply for NPQs.
